SPARC: Stalking and Older Adults Webinar + Ask the Experts

Thursday, January 12, 2023
2:00 pm4:00 pm

Join us for a NSAM Webinar + Ask the Experts!
We all have a role to play in identifying stalking and supporting victims and survivors. To commemorate National Stalking Awareness Month, NCALL is partnering with the Stalking Prevention, Awareness, and Resource Center (SPARC) to host a webinar – Stalking and Older Adults – on January 12, 2023, that examines stalking in the context of elder abuse – its prevalence, dynamics, implications, and resources available for survivors. The webinar will be followed by a Q&A with the presenters, so please come with any questions you might have related to stalking and older adults!

As a result of attending this session, participants will be better able to:
- recognize stalking behavior;
- understand how stalking impacts older adults; and
- identify resources to improve their response to stalking.

Overview
Though millions of people are stalked every year in the United States, the crime of stalking is often misunderstood, minimized, and/or ignored.

Stalking is a pattern of behavior directed at a specific person that causes fear. Many stalking victims experience being followed, approached and/or threatened – including through technology. Stalking is a terrifying and psychologically harmful crime in its own right, but it is also a predictor of potentially lethal violence: 1 in 5 stalkers use weapons to threaten or harm victims, and stalking triples the risk of intimate partner homicide.

Presenters
This webinar will feature the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL) Justice System Coordinator, Ann E. Laatsch, J.D., and the Stalking Prevention, Awareness, and Resource Center (SPARC) Training and Awareness Specialist, Dana Fleitman, M.A.Ed.H.D.
